Places of interestGrotte de VillarsThe Villars grotto is the largest underground network in the Perigord. The underground river has hollowed out huge chambers, connected to each other by galleries. During the guided tour you will be able to admire impressive stalacties and enjoy the impressive son et luminere show. More information can be found at www.grotte-villars.com Oradour-sur-GlaneDuring World War II, Oradour-sur-Glane was the scene of a cruel massacre carried out by SS troops. The remains of Oradour have now been preserved as a commemorative museum and resource centre. LascauxFurther South are the fascinating caves at Lascaux, renowned for it's cave paintings. Jumilhac le GrandThe chateau at Jumilhac is open to the public during the summer, this beautiful town also hosts a Sunday market during July and August. Set in the National Park this area is rich in beautiful scenery and many signed walks. Gold has been mined here from 100BC and the Musee de L'Or retraces the history of gold mining and panning. You can still pan for gold in the rivers around Jumilhac, you might strike it rich! Richard the Lionheart RouteFollow the trail of 11th/12th century castles and fortresses Richard I would have known, from Coussac-Bonneval to Chalus where Richard was struck down by an arrow. During summer months many of these castles organise special events, exhibitions and concerts. BrantomeThe charming town of Brantome is an island encircled by a loop of the river Dronne, linked to the outside world by five bridges, hence it's nickname 'Venice of the Perigord'. A lovely place to visit; stroll through the picturesque streets, eat a meal in one of the many restaurants and then explore the river in a hired canoe or a more leisurely river boat. |
